The capital of North Macedonia. It's known for it's statues and the neo classical facades on many city buildings.. It's also one of the oldest known cities in Europe and you can visit the ancient fort, bazaar and other historical sights. The city is in the shadow of Mount Vodno which has a huge cross on top known as the Millennium Cross - it's twice the height of Christ the Redeemer and definitely worth visiting. There's a cable car to the top if you don't want to hike. North Macedonia has a number of wineries too.

When is the best time to visit Skopje?

Spring and early autumn are ideal for café life, parks and sight seeing. Summers can be hot; winters are crisp but atmospheric (and photogenic). It's still relatively undiscovered as a tourist destination, compared to other capital cities in Europe, so 'avoiding peak season' is not something to worry about.

North Macedonia is not in the common Schengen area. North Macedonia could be a good choice to extend your stay in Europe beyond the 90/180 Schengen limit. This is known as the 'Schengen Shuffle'.

Macedonian is spoken. Some residents also speak English, particularly among the younger population. Basic greetings in Macedonian are appreciated. North Macedonia officially uses the Macedonian alphabet which is a variation of Cyrillic Script. Using tools like google lens and translate are very useful for translating signs, menus and directions. Albanian is also fairly widely spoken, especially in the Tetovo area.

The official currency is the Macedonian Dinar (MCD). Cash is common, especially in markets, and smaller cafés, but credit and debit cards are widely accepted in hotels, supermarkets, and larger restaurants. ATMs are easy to find; avoid dynamic currency conversion and choose to be charged in MCD. The currency is a closed currency, so you will need to access cash on your arrival and try and spend it before you leave.

What type of plug is used in North Macedonia? Do I need an adapter?

Type C and F European 2 pin plugs will fit plug sockets in North Macedonia. If you are travelling from outside Europe, including US, UK, Australia and New Zealand you will need an adapter for your plugs to fit. The voltage is 230/240V, so a converter will be required for 120V appliances (mainly US) which are not dual voltage.

If you wish to use the internet with your phone, you may to need to buy data or rely on wifi, to avoid expensive roaming charges. If your phone supports Esim, this is the simplest route, I've used both Airalo and Roamless in North Macedonia. Alternatively it's possible to buy a physical sim. (often the cheapest option). Be aware each Balkan country has their own phone networks, so you may need to buy multiple sims. Roamless E-sim allows you to carry your balance from one network to another, so it is my preferred choice for Esim.
