Why Visit Romania

Romania is far more varied than its clichés suggest. From Bucharest and its contradictions, to the architecture, monasteries, and churches of Iași, and the medieval towns of Transylvania, there’s a remarkable amount to see across the country.

Language

Romanian is the official language. English is widely spoken in cities and tourist areas.

Romanian Leu (RON). £1 = approx 5.8 RON. €1 = approx 5.0 RON.

Time Zone

Eastern European Time (EET; UTC+02:00). Daylight saving time (UTC+03:00) is observed from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October.

Visas

Romania is in Schengen so passport holders from Schengen countries can travel and work freely. UK & US citizens do not need a visa for short stays.

Electricity & adapters

Standard European plug types (C/F) with 230V power.

When to Go

Spring and autumn are ideal. Summers can be hot; winters are cold with snow in mountainous regions.
